Hosting your Domain’s Email with RocketFast

Posted in: How To's by Kinetic on October 5, 2009

The ways of the internet seem to be shrouded in mystery at times, but hosting your domain’s email with RocketFast is actually quite simple.

Question: Isn’t it complicated to start hosting my domain’s email with another provider?

Answer: No.  As the owner of  your domain, you only have to do one thing. You need to update your domain’s MX Records to point to our mail servers.

In short, a domain’s MX Record tells the world where your email should be delivered.  Once we have your email accounts setup on our RocketFast server, and once you have your software setup with your new RocketFast account, you can update your MX Records to the following.

(MX Record #1) mail.rocketfast.net  (with a preference value that is the lowest)
(MX Record #2) mail2.kinetictg.com (with a preference value above the first)

The Preference Value is just a number that communicates priority about your mail servers to the rest of the internet.  The lower the number, the higher the priority.  Email gets delivered to the highest priority server unless it’s not answering, then things roll to the next server in the list. Pretty basic.

Here are our servers MX Records as an example.

rocketfast.net. MX 10 mail.rocketfast.net.
rocketfast.net.
MX 20 mail2.kinetictg.com.
